You can experience everything that Ston has to offer in just one day, making it the perfect day trip from Dubrovnik. Sitting at the gateway to Pelješac are two twin settlements, Veli Ston and Mali Ston, linked by an imposing stretch of fortifications. The walls were first constructed when the Republic of Dubrovnik took charge of Ston in 1333 in the hope that the defences would protect saltpans that were instrumental in the Republic’s growing fortunes.
Now, only 40 families have permission to grow Oysters in Mali Ston and farming has waned in recent years due to the prevalence of the dorada fish, an intrusive species that is able to crush shells with its mighty jaw and devour the meat inside.
