Afterwards, climb the ramparts over to Ston where you can have a leisurely lunch of squid ink risotto to explore the town and its sights. By evening time, you will be ready for more wine, which can be found at the Wine Cooperative in nearby Putniković.

Sitting at the gateway to Pelješac are two twin settlements, Veli Ston and Mali Ston, linked by an imposing stretch of fortifications. Hugging the hillside for 4 miles between the two villages, this is the longest defensive wall in Europe and the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China. Construction began in 1333, when Pelješac was ruled by the Republic of Ragusa, and continued for almost four centuries, as the builders had to adapt to the rough terrain and advancements in warfare technology. By the time the walls were completed, they would span 7 kilometres and include three fortresses, 41 towers, 7 bastions and a system of moats, all designed to repel invading forces and protect the salt pans that provided the town with its wealth.

Ston and Mali Ston are connected by a stretch of 3km-long fortifications that straddle the hillside between the two settlements. The walls were first constructed when the Republic of Dubrovnik took charge of Ston in 1333 in the hope that the defences would protect saltpans that were instrumental in the Republic’s growing fortunes.

Now, only 40 families have permission to grow Oysters in Mali Ston and farming has waned in recent years due to the prevalence of the dorada fish, an intrusive species that is able to crush shells with its mighty jaw and devour the meat inside.

Staking

Crypto staking is the practice of locking your digital tokens to a blockchain network in order to earn rewards—usually a percentage of the tokens staked. Staking cryptocurrency is also how token holders earn the right to participate in proof-of-stake blockchains.

You can think of staking as the crypto equivalent of putting money in a high-yield savings account. When you deposit funds in a savings account, the bank takes that money and typically lends it out to others. In return for locking up that money with the bank, you receive a portion of the interest earned from lending – albeit a very very low portion.

Staking cryptocurrency is potentially rewarding, but inherently risky. The practice of staking is becoming increasingly popular as platforms like Ethereum make staking accessible while more blockchains adopt proof-of-stake consensus mechanisms. Learning about cryptocurrency staking is a great first step toward mastering this potentially lucrative strategy.

While smart contracts aim to be secure by design, their security is only as strong as their code. Flaws or bugs can lead to vulnerabilities, making it essential for developers at Ledger Leopard to rigorously test and audit smart contracts before deployment.

Digital Identifier (DIDs) smart contracts built on distributed ledger technologies (decentralized) give individuals total control of their data and allow them to share the content of their data as they please, increasing security and reducing the possibility of data mismanagement or a breach.

Smart contract technology also enables decentralized finance (DeFi), which is most often associated with peer-to-peer transactions using cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and Ethereum’s Ether. DeFi smart contracts could reduce the time and cost of settling these transactions. They also show promise in automating manual banking processes traditionally performed by financial institutions, such as evaluating loan eligibility and processing insurance claims.

Tony bridge

Many were attracted to the cathedral by the intelligence of his preaching and the warmth of his personality. He was the first to admit that his talents did not extend far into the area of management, and he viewed his administrative duties with no enthusiasm; meetings of the cathedral chapter were introduced by “You poor sods don ’t want to be here and neither do I, so let’s get through with it”.

Bridge enlisted as a private in the British Army on the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. He was commissioned in the Buffs in 1940, and served in Egypt and North Africa, interpreting aerial photographs. He joined the staff at the School of Military Intelligence at Matlock in Derbyshire in 1943. He was demobilised in 1945 in the rank of major.

Tony Bridge was spared most of this at Guildford Cathedral, but he was too much of an individualist to make a wholly successful Dean, and he had neither the inclination nor the aptitude to deal with the administrative and financial burdens which tend to dominate the decanal ministry. But he made good use of the cathedral pulpit, whenever he had a chance to occupy it.
